U9 program focuses on introducing young players to hockey through fun, skill development, teamwork

U9 (2018-2019)


U9 Community Hockey (Ages 7–8) This program is designed to introduce young players to hockey in a fun, supportive environment. The focus is on learning the fundamentals, developing individual skills, and building teamwork and fair play.

  • Curriculum & Approach:
  • Progressive, learn‑to‑play model with structured drills, skill sessions, and fun games (shinny, freeze tag, obstacle courses).
  • Emphasis on motor skill development, cooperation, and enjoyment of the sport.
  • Players rotate through all positions - no full‑time goalies or specialization at this level.
  • Eligibility:
  • Open to all players born in 2018–2019 (ages 7–8).
  • No prior U7 experience required.
  • Evaluations & Team Formation:
  • Early September‑season evaluations measure skill levels.
  • Teams are tiered from 1 to 6, ensuring players compete with others of similar ability.
  • Each team has 18–20 players.
  • Season Structure (October–March):
  • Standardized model: 18 games + 18 practices.
  • Practices are half‑ice, with two teams sharing the surface.
  • Games are 4‑on‑4, half‑ice format, with one referee per side.
  • Teams split into two groups during games, so both halves of the ice are active.
  • No formal scorekeeping, game sheets, or statistics focus is on play and development.
  • Scheduling:
  • Weekend games between 8:00am–5:00pm; weekend practices may start earlier.
  • Weeknight practices (Mon–Thu) run between 6:00–8:00pm.
  • Arena locations vary across Edmonton.
  • Events & Extras:
  • All teams participate in Minor Hockey Week (January) with at least 2 games.
  • End‑of‑season Jamboree in March celebrates the year. - if accepted into the Bruins tourney
  • Teams may request extra practice ice (at set rates), often funded through fundraising activities like bottle drives.
  • Family Involvement:
  • Parents help with fundraising to cover additional ice, tournament fees, or team activities.
  • Each team sets its own budget and activity plan at the start of the season.
  • Program Goal: To give young players a positive first hockey experience, teaching skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship while keeping the focus on fun and development.
